Totally adorable. Well, guess what? These Spooky Spider Paper Plate Crafts for Kids certainly meet all of those criteria. Sweet Pea and I had a blast making these critters. Materials Needed:

How to Make the Spiders

  • Cut the paper plate in half.

  • Squeeze purple and black paint into a bowl or other paint container. Let your kid paint the paper plate halves. Sweet Pea painted two spiders black, one purple, and one spider a purple/black mix (so, it looked darker purple).

  • Let the paint dry.
  • Either cut legs out of a black or purple foam sheet or use foam 'craft sticks.' If you want to be true to form, you will need 8 'legs' per spider. However, we ran out of legs, so two of our spiders only had 6 legs.
  • Arrange the legs, one batch at a time, onto a cookie sheet or another craft-safe working surface. Put out a few tubes of squeezable glitter glue and let your kid cover the spider legs with glitter. At first I had to show Sweet Pea how to zigzag the glitter glue to ensure it got on all of the legs.

  • Let the glitter-glued spider legs dry. Note: this might take a few days or as much as a week, depending on how thick the glitter glue globs are.
  • Once the paper plate halves are dry, it is time to create the spider face. We started with the eyes. I set out various sizes and colors of googly eyes and let Sweet Pea pick how she wanted to arrange them. Her creativity was pretty incredible actually. You can also use a red (or other color) pom pom for the nose. Stick them on the plate with craft glue.

  • If your kid is good with scissors, let them cut out the teeth from the yellow foam. Otherwise, cut them out yourself.
  • Squeeze a line of glue at the bottom of the paper plate where the teeth are supposed to go, and let your kid stick the teeth on.
  • Let the spider face dry.

  • The easiest way to stick the spider legs onto the spider body is to use the glue gun. However, you can do it with craft glue.. it is just messier. Either way, apply a thin coat of glue along the back of the curved part of spider body. Don't just apply one strip of glue. You want the 'strip' to be 1-2 inches wide so that more of the spider leg is stuck to the back of the body.
  • When sticking on the legs, make sure a good third of the leg is stuck to the back of the plate. If you want to ensure the legs are somewhat symmetrical, stick on the 12, 3, and 9 o'clock position legs first. Then stick on the rest of the legs in between.
  • To make the spider look like it is spinning a web, cut a 1 to 1 1/2 foot length of yellow yarn. Hot glue about 6 inches of the yarn to the back of the plate so that it is firmly stuck on, but so that the spider doesn't dangle 'unnaturally.'

And that is it. Isn't this little spider craft just so cute? Sweet Pea really loved every part of making these spiders. After we were done, I hung them from our kitchen island and when she sees them, she starts singing the 'Itsy Bitsy Spider' song. Cute!

Thank for checking in with me today. What craft projects have you done with your kids lately?
